Recently, a fellow student emailed me asking for assistance installing the fonts for the Studying Islam coursework. Dr. Khan has asked me to post my reply online, insha'Allah, it will help someone else that may be experiencing difficulties. ~~~~ begin email Thank you for your recent email, and the opportunity to be of service. I hope this email finds you well and in the best of iman. In order to help you most efficiently, there are a series of steps and questions. Please do not be insulted if some seem basic and simple - the majority of computer-related problems are due to some minor oversight, so it is important to go step by step to determine just where the problem is. Step 1: Visit http://www.studying-islam.org/studyprocedure.aspx#sysreq and confirm that your computer meets the System Requirements for the courses (the Mozilla Firefox browser works fine as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator). Step 2: Ensure you have downloaded the correct course work (the lesson "with Arabic writing" option on the course page). Step 3: If your computer meets the requirements, please let me know which operating system you are using (for example, Windows 98 or Windows XP). Different operating systems require different types of font downloads. Step 4: Have you tried manually downloading the fonts: Fonts for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP: http://www.studying-islam.org/download/fontpackage/UITechsFontPackage98MEXP.exe Fonts for Windows 2000, Windows NT: http://www.studying-islam.org/download/fontpackage/UITechsFontPackageNTAnd2K.exe If not, click on the link for your operating system. The file should download to your computer. Close all open programs and files, and then double-click on the font file. It will automatically install the files to your Windows/Fonts directory. Often, it will take your computer a few moments to "realize" that the new fonts are there. To make it simple, just reboot your computer and then try to open the course material. Insha'Allah, you should see the Arabic writing. If you did try, and you encountered an error, what did it say? Does everything appear to work but you still cannot see the fonts? ~~ end email Post any problems here, and, insha'Allah, I shall endeavor to check in more frequently to help out.
