The basic need of religion is that it answers certain questions that arise in our mind and which can not be answered by science or human reasoning alone. The reason being that these are 'metaphysical' questions which are beyond the scope of science. For e.g questions like a) Does this universe has a creator or it was created out of chance? b) If it has a creator then what was his purpose for creating this universe and humanity? c) Does this creator communicates with humanity throught some medium or he has left humanity to fend for itself? d) We observe that every human being dies after some time. Hence a questions arises that is death the end of life or there is some life after death? e) If there is life after death then do our actions in this life affect our life after death? f) Are good deeds rewarded and punishment given for bad deeds after death? g) We observe that some good people live a life full of miseries and trajedies in this life through no fault of theirs and some bad people enjoy all the best in life, again through no merit of theirs. Why is it so? Is it all haphazard or is there is design behind all this? Hence religion basically answers all these questions.
