[2:208] O you who believe! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly; and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One. This directive from Allah, the Creator, is to be applied by all Muslims. When one embraces Islam, one submits in totality to the teachings of Islam. There can be No “Shortcuts” nor “Picking and Choosing” of which teachings in Islam will be applied and which will not be applied in a Muslim’s life. In accepting and embracing Islam, all facets of one’s life must be lived in conformity with the Shariah and this is not limited to only “eating and drinking habits.” But it coves each and every aspect of our life, e.g. it also covers how a Muslim should conduct his financial transactions etc. Income sources too, must also not be against what the religion has defined. In Islam, whatever income that is Hara’m or non-permissible is prohibited from being used to feed the family. It is said, “the flesh that grows out of no- permissible income is destined for hell” It is therefore the responsibility of all Muslims to ensure that the income they earn is from a Hala’l source. What constitutes Hala’l income? [red]Prohibitions in Islam include the following:[/red] [2: 60] Eat and drink of that which Allah hath provided, and do not act corruptly, making mischief in the earth. [5: 100] Say: The bad and the good are not equal, though the abundance of the bad may please you; so be careful of (your duty to) Allah, O men of understanding, that you may be successful. 1. Riba or usury as practiced in conventional banking and insurance; 2. Immoral activities such as stealing and prostitution; 3. Maysir or gambling, whether in casino or any related activities; 4. Food and beverage businesses which are not permissible such as pork and alcohol; 5. Exploitative or manipulations in business dealings, including monopoly; Doctors fee comes mostly under this heading (Exploitation and monopoly etc). 6. Gharar or uncertain transactions such as buying insurance policy for life. 7. Another source of income is by working part-time, which has been the trend in many countries. People work part-time with the expectation to gain extra income for themselves. Those with skills such as sewing, drawing or writing, can use their skills to get additional income. All they have to do is to put in extra effort and to work extra hours in order to do the job. One thing that has to be remembered is if they are working full-time, they should not use their working time to do their part-time job. This is prohibited in Islam as they are paid to do their main job during the official working hours. Doing the part-time job at the expense of the full-time job is considered stealing, which is against Islamic work ethics. Income of most of the doctors comes under this heading again like No.5 as above.
