I totally agree, improvement at an individual as well as national level is very much required. My assessment of the situation that you have described is as follows,

Most people have devised these way-outs for themselves in order to reconcile with this harsh reality that they have no control, whatsoever, on their state of affairs. So when pursuit of true happiness seems to be too far-fetched an idea, avenues of immediate pleasure become more important as they seem to be more achievable. Those fortunate ones, who get atleast some education on religion are able to bypass this psychological trap, by thinking of Aakhirat as their ultimate target while keeping their worldly affairs in order. That is a relief ofcourse but...

Their perception that they have no control gives oppurtunity to power hungry elements to take control of the situation, and hence making this phenomena self-fullfilling. So what will break this cycle? People need to be socially and politically aware, and should be able to peacefully yet firmly communicate their opinions. They should constantly be striving for a system that incorporates their views. They should dare to raise their voice against any injustice they are subjected to. If we dont do this, our integrity will always remain in custody of the western (or any other) powers.
