those days, rabies was spreading through dogs only.
[hl]What is the authenticated source?[/hl]
Read these again Narrated by 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "It is not sinful of a person in the state of Ihram to kill any of these five animals: The scorpion, the rat, [hl]the rabid dog[/hl], the crow and the kite." Narrated by 'Aisha: The Prophet said, "Five kinds of animals are mischief-doers and can be killed even in the Sanctuary: They are the rat the scorpion, the kite, the crow and the [hl]rabid dog[/hl]." It is clearly mentioned rabid dog, other animals that could be infected are not mentioned and I couldn't find any narrations in Sahih Bukhari that mention other rabid animals, correct me if I'm wrong. So in my opinion it would not be wrong to conclude from these narrations that in Prophet's time dogs were infected with rabies and they posed a serious threat to humans, therefore it wasn't wrong to kill them.
complete the full reference, page, no, hadith,no, book, no etc..
