Like you said it is his upbringing which is responsible for all this so tell him he shouldn't feel bad about it. But since he's a fully matured man having the sense of right and wrong it is incumbent upon him to fullfill the duties assigned by Allah.
You can present him a good book on salat. But since this is the age of internet you can sit with him and read the following articles as a good guide.

Remember to take it slow, you can't expect a change overnight. Don't overdo, meaning don't get after him so much that he gets irritated. Always be polite show love and care when you try to explain to him.
