hi i take your point, the forum is a valuable opportunity to discuss and reflect on different viewpoints, and to be open to new ones. i think that its always difficulty to return to sources and texts to reevaluate them without the danger of then realigning them to current preoccupations and concerns. i think it can be very instructive to look from another perspective. for example one can take three of the values that are held to be axiomatic of western culture, tolerance, equality and the scientific view. thats not to say that they are universally accepted or practised in the west, nor to say that non western cultures should adopt them completely. But they are values which any non western culture has to reckon with. if one looks at a variety of quranic commentaries on such matters they have an interesting range of views and opinions.i feel that this is a very interesting area to look at and interpret. what do you think? regards rod
