If it were obligatory, Allah would have made it so. If you're saying that they didn't marry because they had a mission to fulfill, then I would humbly disagree in terms of taking that as an explanation. I cannot believe that any of Allah's prophets - peace and blessings be upon them - would sacrifice his 'orders' for whatever reasons. Recommended, 'yes'.
