My understanding of mahr is that because the nikah is a legal contract (offer acceptance etc)some consideration needs to be given in accepting, therefore the mahr is a monetary form (but not always) of that consideration. Those of you who are lawyers and have studied contract law will know what I'm on about. (Insha'allah!) When the contract is breached/ended (talaq)the mahr is returned. The intention of mahr is not to support the wife after the talaq (but it can be used for that purpose). I don't understand why when a man divorces his wife, if he wants her bak she has to marry another man and consumate that marriage before remarrying husband number one. Firstly, is my understanding correct and secondly, isn't that punishing the woman? What is the lesson, if any, for the man who prematurely divorced his wife and then wants her back? Grateful for your replies, Raffia
