Dear Proud Christian, I think you are very intelligent, you are correct. Beating or 'hitting' a wife is a stupid, cowardly, uncivil thing to do and which has, destroyed many marriages. The Quran says: "Either retain them in kindness or release them in kindness. Do not retain them in order to hurt them..." Quran: 2:231 Islam doesn't allow Muslims to beat wives at all! A Muslim is not allowed to abuse another Muslim or anyone for that matter! Those who say beating is allowed, have a misconception on only one arabic word (daraba) taken out of literal context from another verse. Some Muslims have also based it on one or two misquoted narrations of our prophet. Our prophet, himself never permitted any woman to be beaten or mistreated and there are many narrations that promote tolerance and respect for a woman... and of course, no wife beating! Peace, Thameena
