Asalaamualykum everyone, In response to the following news headlines: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/8608282.stm I just thought I'd add... Muslims are not supposed to attach themselves to place, right? Nor person- nothing physical. As long as it gets the job done- and clearly, a green coloured circular dome originally copied off the Jewish synagogues of Jerusalam during the Umayyad dynesty is not getting the job done 1300 odd years later. I mean- now that our traditional symbols for mosques is literally getting shot to pieces, we can maybe revert our understanding of mosques to serve as 'functional' rather than 'symbollic'. For example, if I were to ever make a mosque, I'd totally give it the Will Allsopp- (Peckham Library) look. http://thelunaticarms.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/pecklib460279-glow.jpg With a big buzzing hollywood-esque 'MOSQUE' sign twirling slowly at the top... And the only reason I'd ever even consider having a minaret, is if I could put a water slide on it. With a wudu area at the top, (imaam cant even give adhaan in this country anyway, might as well get a nice view of the city while washing his feet) and the super cool water slide all the way down to the mimbaar. Wudu and transport all in one. Maybe not even a wudu area required- water slide does it all. Lift access round the back. Theme park and Mosque ALL IN ONE. Maybe that way kids will finally start coming to the mosques. And no one's gonna start shooting a theme park. Maybe even non-muslims will use it between prayer times on Saturdays. And while the kids queue up for the 'wudu slide' we could play some Dawud Wharsnby innocently in the background (Allah made us all...a different shade and colour...*not just green*...) You may notice that I'm choosing to take an angle on this which is completely not addressing the humanitarian issue of firing at a place of worship, no matter what it looks like. All I'm saying is, we make the new mosques so crazy and so unorthodox, that our dear retiring green capped uncles run for the green capped yorkshire hills- letting us make some real changes in our new societies without any 'good old green domed days' infuriority complexes.
