Tomorrow (Thursday 13 September 2007) is an important date for Muslims across the world as it heralds the start of Ramadan.  The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, it is a time of deep religious significance when Muslims fast during daylight hours.  
 
Here in the Royal Borough there are a number of our Muslim colleagues who will be observing this special festival and will not be eating or drinking (not even water) between sunrise and sunset.  They will have a pre-fast meal (suhoor) before dawn and a post-fast meal (iftar) at sunset.
 
If you work with someone who is taking part in the month-long festival, please be sympathetic to any changes necessary in their working day and to the fact that they need to get home in time for prayers each evening.  In fact, this is a good time to ask them about their faith and find out more about Ramadan, which is intended to help teach Muslims self-discipline, self-restraint and generosity.  It is also a reminder of the suffering of the poor, who may not have enough to eat.
 
Ramadan ends with a three-day celebration, Eid-ul-fitr, the festival of fast-breaking - a joyous time of prayers, socialising, festive meals and gifts.
