Who created you... -- Dr.Henna Khan M: e: hkhan135@aol.com Parent Partnership Governor Herschel Grammar School Slough Community Gynaecologist SRH (Sexual & Reproductive Health) Member, Royal College of Obs & Gynae. team director www.serving-humanity.net [/purple] [blue]Association of Muslim Governors [AMG] in association with the Pakistan Welfare Association (PWA) presents: SEX EDUCATION IN STATE SCHOOLS: WHAT? WHY? HOW? WHEN? WHO? Date: Sunday 24th May 2009 Time: 5pm – 6.30pm Venue: Pakistan Welfare Association (PWA), Youth & Community Centre, Darvills Lane, Chalvey, Slough, SL1 2PH Last Autumn the Government announced that lessons about personal, social and health matters including sex and relationships will be compulsory in all England's schools from ages five to 16. As Muslim parents, teachers and school governors, the subject of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) has always been an uncomfortable one. On the one hand we are aware of the falling moral standards and the other hand the lack of response from the Muslim community leading to our children developing dual personalities. The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Western Europe1, a recent UNICEF report placed Britain at the bottom of the league of 21 developed countries for children's well-being. Amid this chaotic picture there are growing calls to teach Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) at an even earlier age. This workshop will enable School Governors : - Have a deeper understanding of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) - What guidelines have the Government set for teaching SRE? - What does the repeal of Section 28 mean for schools? - What is the Role of the Governing Body i.e. School Governors? - What is the role of the Local Community, Parents and Mosques? - Do parents have the right to Opt-Out? - Towards devising a SRE policy suitable to your school - Watch a sample video of SRE shown in schools - Practical advice Please come to this seminar to learn, share and develop a strategy to go forward. You do not need to be a parent or a governor to attend! Inshallah a local Mufti/Imam will be present and an experienced local state school teacher of SRE for advice. We are working in conjuction with SREIslamic, a campaign group challenging the government's proposals from an Islamic perspective. Visit the campaign blog and sign the online petition: http://sreislamic.wordpress.com All welcome and admission is free but pre-registration is required.
