Misinterpretation of the hadith, Man baddala Dinahu faqtuluh (kill him who changes his religion) has caused the problem. This order has been made to look general and permanent, though it was said in a particular circumstance for a particular group. Shaykh Subhani writes that this order was made to counter a plan prepared by Jews of Madinah. They had premeditated that some of them embrace Islam for some time and then return to their old religion. Then some other people do the same. It was aimed to create restiveness among Muslims against their own leadership so that the strong Muslim unity should start collapsing. It was made clear in Qur’an in (Aal Imran, 3: 72-73).
To oppose this scheme the Prophet (SAW) ordered his companions to act in such a manner. Despite this order extensive investigations were made to determine that the case was true and the person concerned was given sufficient time to make clear before the sentence was carried out http://www.theamericanmuslim.org/tam.php/features/articles/shariah_is_killing_an_apostate_in_the_islamic_law/

"And say, 'The truth is from your Lord, so whosoever wants let him believe and whosoever wants let him deny." (al-Nahl 18:29)
“Those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe again, then disbelieve, and then increase in their disbelief - Allah will never forgive them nor guide them to the path.” Surah An-Nisa’, 4:137.
"If then they turn away, We have not sent you as a guard over them. Your duty is but to convey (the Message)…. (al-Shura 42:48) |

From Tafheem-ul-Quran
66:6) O you who have believed, save yourselves and your households from a Fire whose fuel shall be the men and the stones, *16 over which shall be appointed fierce and stern angels, who never disobey Allah's Command and do as they are commanded. *17
*16 Thts verse tells that a person's responsibility is not confined to making effort to save himself from the punishment of God but it is also his responsibility that he should so educate and train to the best of his ability members of his family also to become Allah's favourite servants, who have been entrusted to his care in the natural process of life; and if they might be following a path to Hell, he should try. as far as he can, to correct them. His concern should not only be that his children should lead a happy and prosperous life in the world but; more than that, he should be anxious to see that they do not become fuel of Hell in the Hereafter. According to a tradition reported in Bukhiiri by Hadrat `Abdullah bin 'Umar, the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) said: "Each one of you is a herdsman and is accountable with regard to his herd: the ruler is a herdsman and is accountable with regard to his subjects; the man is a herdsman of his family and is accountable with regard to them; and the woman is a herdsman of her husband's house and his children and is accountable with regard to them. ---------------------------------------
So we must do our every effort to stop our 21 old son from changing his faith to another religion and not let him be the fuel of hell just in the name of religious freedom. This is what happened with some people who used to study the books on wordily things for fulfilling their intellectual needs and worried to much about the freedom of this word rather than worrying to save some one from the hell fire. |

This will not be used here. Its means that we must not force some one to become muslim. We just give dawa to him only and not force him to become muslim. |

Reply: What is the evidence that the Arabic equivalent of the word 'compulsion' is used in this sense only? |

From Tafheem-ul-Quran by Maudoodi Sahib
2:256) There is no compulsion and coercion in regard to religion. *285 The right thing has been made distinct from the wrong thing: now whoever rejects taghut *286 and believes in Allah has taken a firm support that never gives way.
*285. Din here signifies the belief about God embodied in the above 'Verse of the Throne' and the entire system of life which rests upon it. The verse means that the system of Islam, embracing belief, morals and practical conduct cannot be imposed by compulsion. These are not things to which people can be yoked forcibly.
Ibn Kathir's tafsir (commentary) on verse (ayah) 2:256 explains:
"(There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, 'Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Whoever Allah blinds his heart and seals his hearing and sight, then he will not benefit from being forced to embrace Islam.' |

I had asked, What is the evidence that the Arabic equivalent of the word 'compulsion' is used in this sense ONLY?
Is there any evidence to prove that the 'no compulsion' instruction is not applicable in the case of stopping a person from becoming non-muslim?

Two of the great scholars interpreted word 'compulsion' same sense as I did earlier. It is already enough to understand that any other usage of this word would be considered incorrect unless evidence provided.
If you still not satisfy, then now its yours turn to bring some proves and educate me that I am wrong here. |

I am not saying that you are wrong.
I am just trying to understand that when we say There is no compulsion and coercion in regard to religion, why doesnt it apply to a situation where an individual is converting away from Islam? |

If some one is not muslim so he has freewill to remain as nonmuslim or he may accept the faith of Islam. If he remains nonmuslim so he himself going to be the fuel of hell but he is not opening the door for others muslims.
On the other hand if some wish to change his faith from Islam to any other faith so what happend he him going to be the fuel of hell and he also open the door for others muslims to follow him and become the fuel of hell as well. There might be others reasons as well. |
