The poor Children of Pakistan

A Pakistani minister has revealed hundreds of cases of alleged child sex abuse at Islamic schools, or madrassas.
There were 500 complaints this year of abuse allegedly committed by clerics, Aamer Liaquat Hussain, a minister in the religious affairs department, said.
That compares with 2,000 last year, but as yet there have been no successful prosecutions, Mr Hussain told the BBC.
The minister's revelations have sparked death threats and infuriated some religious political leaders.
Comment: One could say the Catholic clergy is not allowed to be married but what of these beasts?
What is sad is that the clerics are pressuring to conceal it!

Only 37 per cent of Pakistan's 25 million school-age children complete primary school, while the global average is 79 per cent and the South Asian average is 50 per cent.
The medium age of children now entering Pakistan's workforce is seven, and four years ago it was eight. Two years from now it may be six.

To our horror the Senate was informed that even though sentencing juveniles to death was unlawful, 1,648 juveniles in Punjab, 313 in the Frontier, 187 in Balochistan and 691 in Sindh had been sentenced to death and were languishing in death cells.
When I produced a clipping from the Oct 4 Dawn about a three-year-old girl sentenced to three years under the FCR, the Fata secretary, security, protested and dismissed the press reports as fabricated. His words were: "A political agent would be out of his mind to sentence three-year-olds under the FCR."
A few days ago I secured an official list of convicted persons un Section 40 of the FCR confined in different Frontier jails. The list included at least 17 small children between two and nine years sentenced to three years in jail under the FCR.

Islamic education of children: beating and chaining?
Participants said that students, as young as 7-8 years were lured into sexual activities by senior students and teachers.......
One of the boys complained of sexual abuse against a teacher but his parents refused to believe him and returned him to the religious school.......
The forms of abuse range from molestation to sodomy and often, senior students are suspended on charges of abuse but are usually re-instated on someone's recommendation or through a donation to the institution.....
The respondents feel that children don't usually disclose because they feel that no one will believe them. Another reason for keeping silent is that they fear the teachers' wrath and influence as the teacher is given unquestionable authority over students........ |
