Salam and peace! May Allah reward you all!
My grandmother says; those women who are active throughout the period of pregnancy deliver easily within a shorter time or may escape the operation.
I am not a doctor but i hope this advice may help. |

Calculate the EDD (Expected Date of Delivery):
Take date of last menstrual period (LMP) add 7 days and 9 months(or take 3 months away). e.g. LMP 10.09.2005 10 + 7 =17. 09-3=6 (or Sept + 9 months = June). Therfore EDD= 17.06.2006. Hope the above is not too confusing. |

Jaza’k Allah Rakhtal and Perv1
The Problems of reproductive system are more common in women than men and most of them (women) have some symptoms, of variable intensities, related to the topics mentioned above. The women are shy by nature therefore, in spite of having any of the problems; most of them hesitate to tell anyone. My point of view is to brief the common minor problems with their solutions so that our sisters may manage themselves, to some extent, at their doorstep if they hesitate telling anyone otherwise the major problems need the patient physically to be consulting the doctor. |

1. Menstruation
Menarche- Age at which menses starts. Approx at the beginning of teenage years. Initially in some can present with pain, heavy or irregular bleeding. If problematic then treatment with combined oestrogen/progestrogen pill is usually sufficent. In very rare instances if the treatment fails then consider investigation for rare bleeding disorders, although vast majority of cases can be dealt with without any investigations.
Heavy periods(Menorrhagia)- Treatment often depends on the severity and personal circumstances including age. Start with Mefenemic acid with or without Antifibrinolytic agent If unsuccessful the consider hormonal treatment: If <35yrs, no health problems with normal weight- usually combined oestrogen/proerogen pill, otherwise progestrogens in various forms including oral, depot injections and hormonal intrauterine device (known as coil). If all above fail & child bearing complete then consider surgical options:- From simple day case procedures such as endometrial ablation to more readical such as hysterectomy. This is very brief summary that I could quickly recall. The treatment options vary for each individual and will try to deal with any specific queries. Next topic PAINFUL PERIODS-Will write a summary when possible, however contributions from others will be appreciated (I know of at least on well known moderator who might be able to respond) Salaam |

PAINFUL PERIODS-Medical jargon refers to as dysmennorhea. Usually pain starts at the beginning of menstruation or few days before and often settles when bleeding ceases. Causes are numerous and include: Endometriosis(will try to explain this condition in more deatail at afuture date), adenomyosis (another form of endometriosis) pelvic inflammatory disease, retrograde mensturation (where some of the menstural blood flows back through the fallopian tubes into the abdomen) and in many cases the cause is not clear. Treatment depends on individual patient and her personal circumstances, however I will briefly outline the possible options:- If pain is tolerable then no treatment is necessary. Intolerable pain initially simple analgesics, next step hormonal treatment such as progestogens only or in combination with oestrogen as a combined pill, more potent agents such as Danazol and GnHRh analogues are not recommende for more than a brief period and should only be undertaken under strict specialist supervision-as have serious side effects. If medical treatment fails then if symptoms are intolerable then may have to consider surgical option of hysterectomy-ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION(mentioned for heavy periods)IS NOT RECOMMENDED IF PERIODS ARE PAINFUL.
N.B. I forgot mention in the earlier article that Heavy Periods can also be self induced by treatment such as NON-HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE and often the removal of this device corrects the problem, although do not forget to use an alternative contraceptive. salaam |

Assalamu Alaykum having started menopause at the early age of 42 my periods have now stopped completly, however my question is this having read and seen things on tv regarding women at a very late age one being i think around 60 becoming pregnant via IVF can you please tell me would this be only via donor egg or could medication be given to restart the egg production in a menopausal woman if so what are the risks of feotal deformity eg downs syndrome. it has been over a year since my last period i think i am therefor termed post menopausal however i do still suffer badly from night sweats and heat aversion. |

Salaam Amna
The only way to deal with tummy is to exercise and eat good heathy foods. the exercises need not be very tough but those that tone your tummy muscles. If you are not sure then seek advice from a fitness instructor and a nutritionist.
As for face colour being black - be grateful to God. For to be black is to be beautiful.
Salaam sisterinislam.
If you have truly reached menopause. Yhen unfortunately this means that you ovaries have no viable eggs. Therefore you cannot become pregnant with your own eggs. But occassionally ovaries stop and then after a considerable time start working again-although this is unlikely to be in your case from the information you have provided. The only option re pregnancy after menopause is donor eggs. As for hot flushes the only answer is HRT (I am afraid all other remedies do not work). I hope this answers your queries regards |
