Doctors Help - Chronical Jaundice
Salaam All,
A friend of mine is suffered to serious jaundice, its been a quite long but hes not getting well. He told me that it is an 'acute hepatitis' and doctors say that the bilirubin level in his blood is increasing everyday. Also, doctors have said there is no specific treatment for jaundice in english medicine so therefore, he is going to get some sort of Hakeem.
Please explain in detial what is the real problem, how can it be cured? how does it happen to a normal person? Its been more than a month and still hes getting worsen everyday. Currently, he is taking treatment in Saudia Arabia.
Regards,

Assallam Walaikum, Jaundice is yellowness of the eyes and skin .It is a manifestation of one of the signs of liver dysfunction .Along with jaundice does he has other symptoms too? Acute Hepatitis is a viral infection and caused by virus .Hepatitis A is spread thru faeco oral route and Hepatitis B is spread thru blood and sexual route .Since you have mentioned about acute hepatitis. This comes under medical jaundice and surgical jaundice has other reasons for which surgical management is recquired.Medication is available to tide over the acute stage ,Hepatitis B progresses to chronic stage .Medications are available .I would like to know what other signs and symptoms are there which will give the idea of how much the disease has progressed and accordingly would be able to advise further . |

Jaundice is a symptom and not a disease. It is characterised by yellow discolouration of eyes and skin. It means that the liver which is the main detoxification centre i.e breaks down substances and filters undesirable materials from the body, is not working properly. Hepatitis mean inflammation of the liver. This inflammation can be caused by infections, medicines and chemicals. Among infections, we have the commenest causes as viral hepatitis, A and B.There are other type of germs that can also cause hepatitis. Recovery from hepatitis depends upon the cause and takes weeks rather than days. It is essential to determine what is the cause of hepatitis. This can be established by blood tests, history of medicines used and life style. In some cases more specific investigations in the form of ultra sound and liver biopsy are required. The management can require supervision of a specialist in liver conditions , if the cause is obscure and requires more sophisticated investigations. My advice would be to go back to your GP and discuss the cause and management plan for hepatitis. To ask your GP if there is a need to be referred to a specialist.Do not turn to alternative therapy the consequences may be drastic. You need to undertsand that the recovery is prolonged and not instant.
