Congrgational Prayer

Salams,
Is congregational prayer onbligatory(fard or wajib)?Would a person be held accountable for skipping a congregational prayer? Some ahadith suggest that the Holy Prophet(pbuh)intended to set ablaze the houses of those people who missed congregational prayer.

GOD SAYS:

· And keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and bow down with those who bow down (2: 43).

· But when the prayer is ended, then disperse abroad in the land and seek of Allah's grace, and remember Allah much, that you may be successful (62: 10).

No my dear. Congregational prayer is not obligatory. But it is very much preferable for Males.
Yes, in my opinion, a person may be held accountable for skipping a congregational prayer if he has done so without any SOLID reason. You know he will get at least 27 times lesser reward of that prayer.
These type of ahadith were related to Prophet's time only. They can be applied now a days ONLY when a Muslim Ruler made congregational prayer compulsory for Male Muslim Citizens.
