Question:
Despite my engagement, my fiancée’s parents have refused to allow me to meet or even talk to her. I would like to know whether we are allowed to talk and meet freely from the Islamic laws point of view.

Answer:
Islam has never restricted unrelated members of the opposite gender from entering into meaningful conversation. It does not make any difference whether they are married, betrothed or single. The only condition set is that they must not indulge in meaningless talk and grant Satan an opportunity to tarnish their inner purification. A woman may talk to her fiancé, colleagues at work, teachers, students and other people with whom she always needs to deal with in discharging her responsibilities and settle mutual affairs. A pre-cautionary measure in this regard is to meet her fiancée in the presene of some elders. As for violation of this right, I believe that we should try to observe traditions in this regard. Islamic Shar’iah attests importance to observing norms and customs in all social matters. We can in the meanwhile try to convince others that such a couple is not prohibited from having meaningful interaction. Defying the norms and rebelling against elders can cause problems and create unease in relations. Therefore, I would suggest against insisting on talking to your fiancée. Regards,
