At the time of the prophet sws miswak was the tooth paste of the time; today is the present form. it does not effect the fast at all. rather its rewarding to clean teeth even duringthe fast. if the prophet sws lived in today's time & age, he would use the tooth paste that is available today.the purpose is to keep the mouth and teeth clean, as personal hygiene is the specific feature of islam which stresses on inner and outer purification as the essence of Islam. |

salam alaykum aboosait, you need to open up your mind. May be travelling around the world will help :P And why do you think that the prophet would search for tooth sticks? Why do you imagine he would go look for things out of norm while living a busy life in London, Newyork, Mumbai, Karachi or Mexico for example? While he would also have to catch trains & buses in time and rush to places for preaching and work, why wouldn't he rather use just the normal tooth paste and brush available in Walmart, ASDA or Tesco shops rather than looking for some particular stick of a random tree when he just wanted to clean his teeth. He would rather keep it most simple & easy so that he can do the more important tasks rather than just sitting like you and decorating his bathroom with various sticks from around the world! |

uncle u can easily imagine him as a decent, peaceful and harmless normal person who would buy his tooth paste, milk & bread from the corner shop but would stop to see if the next door old aged neighbours okay & don't need anything from the shop~ who could also wear jeans/trousers but reasonably loose ones to portray his modesty as he was known to be extra-ordinarily modest, and ofcourse who could be clean shaved as well! why not? keeping a beard is not ordered in Qura'n but is something to which most good people including prophets hv stuck to but they never called non-bearded men 'haram' or 'munafiqs' |

Ms.Khan, where is it mentioned in the Qur'aan that we are only supposed to follow the Qur'aan and neglect the teachings of the Prophet s.w. The Qur'aan states very clearly that we are to obey Allah and His Messenger s.w.
There are many acts, commandments, etc. that are not mentioned in the Qur'aan. Take the number of rakats in salaah as a basic example; the number of rakats for every salaah has not been mentioned in the Qur'ann, rather we have been taught the exact number of rakats for each salaah by our beloved Prophet s.w through his sunnah.
There are numerous ahaadith where the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam is explicitly commanding the Muslims to grow a beard. In this respect a few ahaadith from Bukhari and Muslim are quoted below.
*Ibn Umar radiyallahu anhu quotes the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam as saying, "Cut short the moustache and lengthen the beard." (Bukhari and Muslim)
*Abu Huraira radiyallahu anhu quotes the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam as saying, "Shorten the moustache and lengthen the beard." (Muslim)
*Ibn Umar radiyallahu anhu quotes the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam as saying, "Grow (lengthen) the beard." (Muslim) |

One must recognize that for one to act contrary to Sunnah leaves scope for repentance. However the justification of ones wrong actions is an indirect if not direct opposition of the teachings of Rasulluah s.w The keeping of the beard was an action not only observed, but also commanded by the Holy Prophet s.w
Given below are fatawas (religious verdicts) issued by the four Madhabs and it’s leading scholars on the issue of growing the beard.
Hanafi madhab:
To trim the beard when it is less than a fist’s length, as done by some modern people and hermaphrodites is not permissible in the opinion of all the jurists. To shave the beard as done by unorthodox Jews, Hindus and others is also not permissible. (Durre Mukhtar)
Maliki madhab:
To shave the beard is haram and to trim it in such a manner that it changes one’s natural and normal facial features is also haram. It is also quoted in Kitabul Ib’daa’, that without doubt the four Madhabs are agreed that the beard should be lengthened and that shaving it is haram.
Shafe’ee madhab:
It is quoted in Al Ibaab’, that Imaam ibn Ar’rifaah says that Imaam Shafe’ee, in his book, Kitabul Umm, has categorically stated that shaving the beard is haram.
Al Azraiy says that the correct position in the Shafe’ee madhab is that to shave the beard without a valid medical reason is haram. Similar verdict of prohibition has been issued by Zarakhshi, Baihaqi in his book, Shu’ab Al Iman, and by his teacher Qa’ffal Shashi in Muhasin As Shar’iyyah.
Hanbali madhab:
It is narrated in Shar’hul Muntahaa’ and Shar’hul Manzoomatul Adaab, the most accepted view is that it is haram to shave the beard. Some Ulama like the author of ‘Insaf’, have categorically stated that it is haram. There is no report from anyone to the contrary.
Sheikhul Islam ibn Taymiyyah says, "Shaving the beard is haram."
Ibn Hazm has narrated Ijma (consensus of the Muslims) regarding the obligation of trimming the moustache and keeping the beard, he brings the following ahaadith in support of this Ijma:
"Oppose the Mushrikeen polytheists), trim the moustache and lengthen the beard." (Muslim)
"Whosoever does not trim his moustache, he is not from amongst us." (Ahmed Tirmidhi and Nasai |

Dear Uncle. You don't need all these madhabs if the answer is already in quran. You see how these madhabs can then cause splitting in the community if you try and pull them in everywhere. This is why Allah says that hold tight to my rope (quran). If you dont find it there, look at prophets saw teachings and the madhabs by the four Aima need renewing with changing times and cultures because the writers of these madhabs are not living in today's time and age to answer for everything which faces us today. But please dont shave your beard uncle :P It is an ahsan thing. You may trim it according to a decent fashion of today's time and which suits your face. |

I dont remember having seen a hadith like that. I know some people here in my country who say 'dadhi chodo' meaning chod do kaato mat. (Leave the beard. dont cut it or trim it)Some have it grown down to their naval. There are some others like me (with very little knowledge) who say let the length match your height and face and add to your dignified appearance. That is the minimum (or maximum) requirement according to them because in Islam man is not supposed to imitate woman. |

These traditions about the beard mention that the Prophet (sws) asked the Muslims to allow their beard grow and trim the moustache. Considering such reports in their proper perspective, it becomes certain that these sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) was to condemn a practice of the Majoosi and the Mushrikin ; they would trim their beard and allow their moustache grow. The Prophet (sws) remarked that what should be allowed to grow is beard and what should be trimmed is moustache. He in fact used the words ‘do this against the practice of Majoosi and at some other occasions, Mushrikin (Muslim, No: 382, 383 ). Viewed in this perspective, the intent of the Prophet (sws) was not to treat beard as a religious practice (Sunnah) but to eradicate a wrong approach toward beard and moustache.
If we take these traditions literally, how we will be interpreting the words: “Do the opposite of polytheistsâ€. Polytheists, who are considered so, no longer keep moustache either. Should we now do the opposite and let it grow? And if at some place, polytheists are found to keep beard, should we then do the opposite?

Condemn? what for?
shaving of the beard resembles oneself to the woman, about which there is a severe threat.
It is narrated from Ibn ’Abbaas (radiyallaahu ’anhu) that
the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) has cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men. [Related by al-Bukhaaree, (2/874).]
And similarly, Ibn ’Abbaas’ narration is also related in Musnad Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah. It is narrated that the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said,
“Allaah has cursed the women who imitate men and the men who imitate women.” [Refer to al-Jaami’us-Sagheer (2/123).]
Please note that deed on which is the curse of Allaah and His Messenger (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) is considered a very major and perilous sin
quote: .... the intent of the Prophet (sws) was not to treat beard as a religious practice (Sunnah) ...........
Astagfirullah, then why did he (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) say this:
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said
"I have no connection with one who shaves, shouts and tears his clothing eg. in grief or affication." - Reported by Abu Darda (R.A.) in Muslim, Hadith no. 501
and,
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:
"Anyone who shaves has no claim to the mercy of Allah"
- Reported by Ibn Abbas (R.A.) in Tibrani

But not in this case. You work hard every morning to polish your face with the razor but the success is for the Satan - not for you - because it is the sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam on which you are running the blade. |

It's amazing how the discussion drifted from issue of toothpaste to the issue of beard. @aboosait I do not know in which part of world do you live where the women and men are alike in appearance and the only thing that differentiates them is the beard. So that means a woman can put on an artificial beard and you'll never know she's a woman. And even for the sake of argument I accept that beard is the differentiating factor, can you tell me why can't a moustache or a french beard be the differentiating factor? The hadith you quoted about men and women imitating each other as no relevance in this context. If I'm going to shave every morning I don't see how I'm imitating women. What the hadith are referring to is changing one's nature that God has gifted them. The regarding the other hadith about a person who shaves has no connection and mercy etc, well it's so obvious that there is a need to understand the full context of these aadith first, you are doing something very similar to what mullahs do, quote quranic verses and aadith out of context just to prove their point. Quran and Sunnah do not discuss the issue of keeping the beard so the Divine guidance is devoid of such ruling. If you think aadith are sunnah, then I don't feel we have any bases to continue this discussion. As pointed out earlier the narratives which mention growing of beard are actually pointing to the companions to lengthen their beards and clip the moustache in order to differentiate from the jews. They do not mean that one is not allowed to shave their beards. Keeping a beard in my opinion is a desirable thing to do not obligatory. And this may be very insignificant and petty but I just feel the need to mention it. If you are saying beard is sunnah can you please tell me why should some men be deprived of this sunnah as they do not have hair growing on their face? Does that mean they will always look like women because they don't have a beard. Why didn't God give them the opportunity to fullfil a Divine commandment?
